The Mystery of Unbelief

Joe Vinson

Unbelief doesn’t always look like outright rejection of God. Sometimes it begins with disappointment when God doesn’t work the way we expected. John the Baptist found himself questioning Jesus while sitting in prison, and Jesus reminded him that God’s work does not always match our expectations. But Luke also shows another danger: becoming so familiar with spiritual things that they no longer move us. Familiarity can lead to shallowness, and shallowness can eventually produce self-righteousness—the belief that we are good enough on our own. The challenge for every believer is to remain humble, attentive, and willing to let God’s wisdom transform us rather than expecting God to conform to our expectations.
